Work on the SR20det coupe begins

May 18, 2009

Ian traded a car for two 240s up in Abilene last month. One of them was this Blacktop SR20det coupe that needed love. Owner said it’s timing was most likely off a little bit on the bottom end, ok easy enough. Went and picked it up, heard it run briefly and it did sound like the timing was off, brought it home and let it alone until we had some time. This thread is the documentation of this car from its condition from the previous owner to all the work we do on it.

A few days ago Ian started work on the car and determined that working with someone else’s swap can be a nightmare. Wiring job was correct, but messy. Intercooler was hanging by the piping only. Turbo return was broken. Swap itself was messy. Random parts found in engine bay.

Oh, and the timing was definitely off; guy didn’t know what he was doing and managed to just put the chain on without paying attention to the timing links and it was off top and bottom. Started to re-time it and decided it would just be easier to take the engine out of the bay to make sure nothing else was f’d up. The car has a lot of potential, I look forward to its progress.

Starting to check the timing. Yes, nasty engine bay.

After about a half an hour into looking into the timing it was determined it would be best to just pull the engine.
